MSA is overjoyed to co-sponsor a very special workshop with our partner organization, One Voice, led by Robbie Schaefer. The Yoga of Songwriting workshop for teens age 13-18 will take place at our Lorton studios from 10:00 a. m. – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20. Sign up today for this incredible opportunity!

Yoga is an ancient Sanskrit word whose meaning is to “yoke” or “join together”. The Yoga of Songwriting workshop therefore focuses on the union of mind, body, and soul in service of one’s creativity. Using mindfulness practices as well as songwriting techniques, participants will work to gently point inward, rediscover, and trust their authentic voice. Songwriting will be our tool; however, this workshop is as much about opening up to the place through which the song itself is born as it is about songwriting as a process.

Participants will:
– Be introduced to mindfulness practices and centering techniques
– Explore the nature of creativity and engage in self-inquiry
– Explore rhyming techniques and lyrical and musical tone
– Learn to express authentically through songwriting
– Write and workshop a new original song
– Be provided with writing journals and utensils

Primarily based off the 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose takes place in a small town that has outlawed loud music and dancing in the year 2014.
“There is a time to laugh, a time to weep, a time to mourn, and there is a time to dance. This is our time to dance. It is our way of celebrating life. It’s the way it was in the beginning. It’s the way it’s always been. It’s the way it should be now…”

Join us for our 2nd annual Spring Benefit Gala, hosted by WTTG-FOX 5’s anchor, ANNIE YU

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA), a non-profit, independent performing arts school, is hosting their annual Spring Benefit Concert on Sun., Apr. 6 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at The George Washington Masonic National Memorial at 101 Callahan Drive in Alexandria, Va. Annie Yu, WTTG-FOX 5’s morning anchor, will host the concert that includes performances by Metropolitan Youth Ballet, Metropolitan Youth Tap Ensemble, MSA’s Impulse Jazz Company, MSA Academy vocalists and live music by local musicians. Tickets are $75 per person or $100 per couple with proceeds benefitting MSA’s Next Stage Building Campaign as part of Metropolitan School of the Arts’ campus expansion in Alexandria and Lorton, Va. A reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres (included with tickets) immediately follows at 5:30 p.m. For tickets click here!

MSA Spring Concert Gala host, Annie Yu, has been with WTTG-FOX 5 News for 10 years, as a reporter, producer and anchor. Her love of the performing arts began as a young child, when she donned her first pair of ballet shoes at Metropolitan Fine Arts Center (now, Metropolitan School of the Arts.)  Yu co-anchors WTTG’s “Fox 5 News Weekend” morning show on Sunday, and does live reports for WTTG’s weekday morning show, “Fox 5 News Morning” covering the world of style, fashion and home design in a new morning show franchise called “Style File.” Her aim has always been to help others with her work—especially “to be a voice for the voiceless.”  That desire gave rise to Yu’s long-running morning show franchise, finding permanent homes for lost and abused animals.

“MSA’s annual benefit concert is an exciting time of year for us, when we pull together our great talents to showcase to the public, but it’s also a time to help raise awareness about our mission to expand and grow our performing arts education in the D.C. area,” said Melissa Dobbs, president and founder of Metropolitan School of the Arts in Lorton, Va. “We’re honored to have Annie Yu of FOX 5 News be part of our program this year,” said Dobbs.
