Aims of the Jazz program

  • Study Jazz as a leisure and / or pre-professional activity
  • Experience a technical and artistic framework, age-appropriately devised taking into consideration their physical, cognitive and emotional development, which challenges students and measures the technical, musical and performance skills in the Jazz genre.
  • Experience fun and lively dance movements to a variety of music

Jazz 1a (age 7-9)         

Recommended to concurrently enroll in Ballet
Course Completion: Generally 1-2 years

Description: This course of study enables students to demonstrate an understanding of basic Jazz technique while developing flexibility, core strength, strong lines and dynamic coordination. Classes begin with an energizing warm up to familiar music, followed by a series of combinations, which focus on specific skills such as basic jumps and turns. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Winter Concert and the Spring Production.
Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 1 (age 10-12)    

Recommended to concurrently enroll in Ballet
Course Completion: Generally 1-2 years

Description: This course of study enables students to demonstrate an understanding of basic Jazz technique while developing flexibility, core strength, strong lines and dynamic coordination. Classes begin with an energizing warm up to familiar music, followed by a series of combinations, which focus on specific skills such as basic jumps and turns. While the class follows MSA’s Jazz 1 syllabus, student skill acquisition will be at a more rapid rate than Jazz 101. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Winter Concert and the Spring Production.

Jazz 2

Recommended to concurrently enroll in Ballet

Description: This course of study continues to develop students’ understanding of basic Jazz technique while developing flexibility, core strength, strong lines and dynamic coordination. Classes begin with an energizing warm up to familiar music, followed by a series of combinations, which focus on specific skills such as jumps and turns. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Winter Concert and the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 3

Recommended to concurrently enroll in Ballet

Description: This course of study builds upon the students’ mastery of basic Jazz technique and continues to develop their skills at an intermediate level. Students develop flexibility, core strength, strong lines and dynamic coordination. Classes begin with an energizing warm up to familiar music, followed by a series of combinations, which focus on specific skills such as complex jumps and multiple turns. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Winter Concert and the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 4    

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: This course of study continues to develop students’ Jazz skills at an intermediate level. General concepts include: suspension, control, differing energy qualities, the development of performance skills, the ability to pick up choreography quickly and the execution of increasingly complex combinations. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 5

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Students in this class master Jazz skills at an intermediate level and are introduced to advanced technical skills.   General concepts include the creation of harmonious lines throughout the body. Students study differing movement dynamics and are encouraged to develop a high level of performance skills. They will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 6      

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Students in this class master Jazz skills at an intermediate level.   General concepts include the creation of harmonious lines throughout the body and the ability to transition turns into jumps and vice versa. Students study differing movement dynamics and are encouraged to develop a high level of performance skills. They will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 7      

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Students in this class master Jazz skills at an intermediate level.   General concepts include the creation of harmonious lines throughout the body and the ability to transition turns into jumps and vice versa. Students study differing movement dynamics and are encouraged to develop a high level of performance skills. They will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 8    

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Designed for the intermediate student, this course enables continued progress of Jazz technique. Students continue to build on solid foundations of classical jazz technique and execute varied styles with ease.  Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour


Jazz 9    

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Designed for the advanced student, this course enables continued progress of advanced Jazz technique. Students continue to work on and execute varied Jazz styles with ease, demonstrate maturity in their dancing, and develop dynamics in their performances. In addition, students continue to work on technique and jazz dance skills. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour 30 mins


Jazz 10    

Must be placed by instructor and concurrently enrolled in at least 1 Ballet class
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: Designed for the advanced student, this course enables mastery of advanced Jazz technique. Students continue to acquire the ability to execute varied Jazz styles with ease, demonstrate maturity in their dancing, and develop dynamics in their performances. In addition, they develop the ability to communicate their personal interpretation of the choreography. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in the Spring Production. Class Length: 1 hour 30 mins


TEEN CLASSES

Jazz Intro for 13+ (age 13-18)

Course Completion: Generally 1-2 years

Description: This course is specifically designed for older students who are starting Jazz, and are expected to progress at a faster rate than younger students at this level. The course of study enables students to demonstrate an understanding of basic Jazz technique while developing flexibility, core strength, strong lines and dynamic coordination. Classes begin with an energizing warm up to familiar music, followed by a series of combinations, which focus on specific skills such as basic jumps and turns.
Class Length : 1 hour


Jazz Intermediate (age 14-18)
Recommended to concurrently enroll in Ballet
Course Completion: Generally 2-3 years

Description: This course is specifically designed for older students who are continuing with their Jazz studies, and who are expected to progress at a faster rate than younger students at this level. It builds upon the students’ mastery of basic Jazz technique and continues to develop their skills at an intermediate level.
