This month’s Community Master Class topic is core to the mission of Metropolitan School of the Arts. Next Sunday, January 20, we will feature a hand-selected panel of wellness experts offering advice to parents, student performers and others interested in learning more about the benefits of physical therapy, proper nutrition, and mental health wellness. Wellness has been a driver from the beginning of the founding of Metropolitan and core to our mission of helping students reach their fullest potential.

NUTRITION

About Dr. Mara Scavotto: PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, received a doctorate of physical therapy from the University of Southern California in 2009 and a B.S. in Biopsychology from UC Santa Barbara in 2006. After becoming a physical therapist I spent a year further studying manual therapy and evidence-based practice so that I could become one of the 5% of PTs nationwide who are Orthopedic Certified Specialists. My love for the mind body connection led me to study and complete a lifestyle design coaching series which now enables me to help patients improve their understanding of conscious life choices and the ability to achieve the physical and emotional life goals that matter to them most. Her passion for fitness inspired her to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as a Spin and Zumba instructor.

Throughout her career she’s gained extensive experience treating professional and amateur performing artists and loves working with dancers of all ages. She immersed herself in dance medicine while living in NYC and was fortunate to work backstage with numerous Broadway and Off Broadway shows, The Rockettes, Alvin Ailey, Gelsey Kirkland Ballet, and Ellison Ballet. After moving to the Washington

D.C. area, she has treated The Washington Ballet, The Washington School of Ballet, and worked with actors at Shakespeare Theater and Ford’s Theater. As a lifelong dancer, she understands the concerns of performing artists and feels fortunate to be able to combine her love of medicine with the arts.

Dr. Mara Scavotto, will discuss various important areas of nutrition.  Many of our dancers have been introduced to Dr. Mara as our on-site physical therapist, though her breadth of expertise is tremendous.  Her presentation will cover:

-The highest quality food choices to fuel the performer
-Comparisons of high and low-quality calories in protein, carbohydrates, and fats
-Why eating the wrong foods and/or not enough food is dangerous for a performing artist
-The importance of hydration and high-quality fluid choices
-Basic vitamin supplementation
Dr. Mara will also share her favorite recipe for how to make your own healthy Gatorade and more.

 

PHYSICAL THERAPY

About Dr. Ryanne Glasper: PT, DPT, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Studies in 2002 and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2008 from Long Island University. Her focus is in manual therapy with training from the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) and the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute.

A New York City transplant, Ryanne has spent more than ten years working in dance medicine – from a volunteer with the biomechanics lab of the Analysis of Dance and Movement Center, to practicing on Broadway. She has had the privilege of training with the gifted therapists at WestSide Dance Physical Therapy, and PhysioArts Physical Therapy whom she joined in 2008 and where spent most of her career. She also credits much of her knowledge to her time spent amongst the incredible community of dancers and patients she’s had the opportunity to work with including: the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, RadioCity Rockettes, Paul Taylor Dance Company, New York City Ballet, School of American Ballet, Gelsey Kirkland Academy and more than 15 Broadway shows.

As a disciple of movement, Ryanne has studied movement therapies such as the Franklin Method, Laban/Bartenieff and Feldenkrais – she is also a certified Vinyasa Yoga instructor. In addition to dance medicine, Ryanne is a trained Pelvic Floor Therapist, who specializes in Women’s Health.

Dr. Ryanne Glasper will share on all the aspects of physical strength, training and therapy, geared especially for students who dance.
-Answering questions about injury prevention, dealing with an injury, returning to dance after an injury
-Debunking common myths and beliefs about training and exercise as a dancers
-How to start a self-maintenance program


MENTAL HEALTH WELLNESS

About Emily Hart: LMWS, Emily Hart is a licensed Social Worker with over eight years of experience in behavioral health and primary care. Emily received a Bachelors of Social Work from New York University and a Masters of Social Work at Columbia University focused on behavioral health services and non-profit management.

She began her clinical experience working with adolescents and young adults in outpatient mental health services focusing on substance use, depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. After then completing a clinical rotation focused on children and family mental health services, Emily went on to non-profit management experience developing and implementing community based programs that integrated behavioral health and primary care services. In her current role, she is the administrator of a ambulatory integrated health facility that provides comprehensive and holistic health care for children, adults and families in the New York Metro area.

Emily Hart will provide her expertise on three areas of importance to performers’ mental health.

“Balancing an Unbalanced Schedule”
– Parent view: Help your performer become their best while managing a Metropolitan (or other performer) schedule on top the normal demands of being an adolescent
– Performer view: “I can’t, I have rehearsal.” How to feel good about your choices

“After the Audition”
– Parent View: What to do when when your performer doesn’t get the role… or always gets the role
– Performer view: “Why didn’t they pick me?”  Maintaining a positive self-image

                                             “The Wellness Package”
– Parent View: How do I know my child is “ok” and what to do when I need help
– Performer view: Finding and keeping your healthy self from head to toe
